Greens Container Deposit Legislation supported by all parties across the country

Greens MP Robin Chapple welcomes the growing national consensus on container deposit legislation.

A container deposit scheme puts a 10c deposit on drink cans and bottles, for effective recycling. It will lift WA’s container recycling rate to more than 80%.

Mr Chapple released a consultation Bill this week to create a scheme in WA.

Greens MP Robin Chapple has today released his private member’s bill to bring in 10c deposits on cans and bottles.

“Our straightforward container deposit scheme will give West Australians an easy way to recycle cans and bottles. Drink companies will pay a 10c levy on each can, bottle or carton, and then the consumer can claim the deposit back when recycling the container.

“Western Australia has the worst rates of recycling in the country – and we’ve seen the success of container deposit schemes here previously, and in other states and countries. 

Greens MP attends Malaysian Earth Charter endorsement

Barnett's Promise rings hollow as drilling hits iconic site

West Australian Auditor-General’s Report confirms Poor Compliance Record of Miners

Greens Member for Mining and Pastoral Robin Chapple MLC has welcomed the Western Australian Auditor-General’s report ‘Ensuring Compliance with Conditions on Mining’, saying it confirms what he has been saying for years.

“While much has been made of the mining boom, what is less well known is the poor performance of mining companies when it comes to compliance with environmental requirements,” Mr Chapple said.

Premier Barnett announced on Friday that he had signed a “world first” deal between WA and China.

Greens MPs Robin Chapple, Lynn MacLaren and Senator Scott Ludlam will meet with Malaysian community leaders from Kuantan, concerned about hazardous waste from Australian rare earths processing.

Australian company Lynas mines rare earths and will export these to Malaysia for processing, creating hazardous waste. The rare earths ore contains thorium, which emits alpha particles.

Greens MLC Robin Chapple today gave notice in the Legislative Council of his intention to introduce legislation for a container deposit scheme. The scheme will put a 10c deposit on cans and bottles, to ensure that we maximise recycling.

Kimberley Tidal Energy Project still has Fatal Flaws

Greens Member for the Mining and Pastoral Region Robin Chapple MLC has rejected the Kimberley tidal energy project proposal put forward by Tidal Energy Australia last week, saying it has the same flaws now as it did when it was first introduced eight years ago.


“At that stage the plan was firmly rejected by the Environmental Protection Authority on several grounds,” Mr Chapple said.


“This current proposal has not addressed any of the problems that were identified then and should be again rejected on similar ground.

The ERA Wholesale Electricity Market report clearly identifies the key issue for the electricity sector is the lack of clear government policy.

“Electricity is an essential public good.  The sector is facing critical challenges right now – an aging distribution network, growing demand, and the pressing need to shift from carbon intensive electricity to renewable electricity.

“Now is the time that we need strong government policy to set the framework for the transition to renewable power – so the sector can deliver it.

Robin Chapple MLC, Greens spokesperson on Energy, today called on the State Government to set a fair price for renewable energy and stick with it.


“The Barnett government has chopped and changed policy –  moving from paying solar panel owners basically the same price as households paid for power, to paying 47 cents, then 27 cents from 1 July 2011, and now cutting back to only 7cents a Kilowatt hour fed into the grid.


“It’s just not feasible for the solar industry to continue to grow with a complete lack of certainty from government policy.

I support Matt Eggleston’s call for a long term mine plan for KCGM which incorporates the acquisition/purchase of properties around Mt Percy/Williamstown. Greens Member for the Mining and Pastoral Region Robin Chapple is troubled by reports of arrests in response to 30 days of peaceful protest aimed at protecting the nature and culture of James Price Point north of Broome.

“Woodside is bringing in bulldozers to clear land at James Price Point. We are concerned that they do so without the approvals required under the Aboriginal Heritage Act, and Department of Indigenous Affairs Compliance Team investigation is still ongoing, and not yet finalised ,” Mr Chapple said.
