APPEA hysteria over fraccing

Gas Industry Desperation Revealed in Shrill Outburst

Tuesday 21 May 2013

Robin Chapple MLC, Member for the Mining and Pastoral Region and Greens WA spokesperson on Climate Change and Energy, is bemused by yesterday’s APPEA media release “Gas policy farce”.

“These APPEA comments demonstrate the level of concern within the stagnant backwaters of the fossil fuel industry, as the tide of history washes away the foundations of their position.

“Unlike those more forward-looking elements of the industry, which long ago saw the writing on the wall, APPEA has resorted to a pathetic outburst of hysteria.

“The debate seems to have passed APPEA by, as the world will be leaving this state behind unless we urgently focus on the challenge of reshaping our energy policy to deal with tomorrow’s realities.

“The world and humanity are constantly evolving in response to changed circumstances, much as the climate does in response to higher levels of greenhouse gases.  We no longer have a raft of occupations which were once commonplace, and yet the economy and its number of jobs continues to grow, with ever more people in employment as new technologies emerge.

“The Greens have demonstrated with our Energy 2029 plan that WA does not need to push ahead with APPEA’s expensive, disruptive drive towards fraccing; surveys show the WA public want solar and wind power; APPEA would be well advised to shepherd its members in the same direction”, Mr Chapple concluded.
