Ningaloo decision the right one: Greens

July 4, 2003 - Greens (WA) MLC for the Mining and Pastoral Region Robin Chapple has welcomed the Premier's announcement that the giant resort proposal for Ningaloo Reef has been knocked back once and for all.

'This decision is important for several reasons. It is first and foremost a huge win for the Ningaloo Reef system, and for the people who have campaigned for many years to safeguard it. It is also a sign that times are moving on, and sends a message which other proponents of coastal developments can't afford to ignore.'

'The Government should be congratulated for standing firm against a highly aggressive, litigious proponent, and for coming down on the side of the community. Should the proponent pursue legal action, I know the majority of West Australians will support the Premier in defending this marvellous corner of our State.'

Mr Chapple noted the Government's commitment to improving services and infrastructure in Coral Bay and Exmouth, and said that following through on these objectives would be crucial to sealing the long-term preservation of Ningaloo Reef and Cape Range.

'The hard work in terms of a sustainable management plan for the area is still to be done,' Mr Chapple said, 'But this work can now proceed without the spectre of a manifestly inappropriate marina and resort development looming.'

'I have to congratulate the people of Western Australia who have worked so hard to bring about this result on behalf of our precious marine environment.'

'I take my hat off to the community of WA for this incredible win,' Mr Chapple said.
